| Janaka revels in stories for all seasons and ages. As a teacher, I am happy to see my students with eyes a-glow, lost in his tales. As a person, I am grateful for the warmth and life that stirs in my heart as I listen. Nourishing, exciting, satisfying! ----Rachelle Davis, 3rd Grade Waldorf teacher For over a decade I have been telling stories, which started during my Waldorf teacher training. In Waldorf education each year's curriculum revolves around stories, as stories are recognized as not only a way to help children connect to the mythic journey that humantity has walked but also as a way to keep the language rich and the imagination alive. There is a magic that can be seen on the faces of children when a story is woven as they are free to create their own images of what may be happening, perhaps seeing themselves or their parents as the hero or heroine; which is much different than watching a movie or a television show, for those mediums impose their images on the viewer. And once those detailed images are fixed into the mind's eye they are hard to change. Whereas the images from a story are free to evolve as the child grows. For over 8 years I have told stories on a daily basis to my classes: whether they are classical tales or perhaps they may be historical figures telling of their times from a first persom perspective, helping to make history alive for the students. In addition I have told tales to a wider audience at festivals, libraries and fairs, as well as during my workshops. We are all on a journey, an adventure--stories help to remind us of that. Happy adventures, Janaka |
